My name is Margaret Quirke and I am currently the Subscriptions Coordinator: Agents for Informa IBI. I have worked at Informa since 2006 after returning from a gap year travelling to USA, Samoa, Tonga, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia.

I want to complete this trek because it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and an amazing challenge. It will bring me outside my comfort zone and in to unknown territories and will make me push myself further physically and mentally to achieve this goal.

I know I will gain immensely from this trek; visiting a wondrous place where not many westerners have been and adding new adventures to my life experiences, leading to a greater self-confidence and a better understanding of social and cultural issues.

I hope to bring determination and high spirits to the team, encouraging everyone to keep going and being an ear to anyone who wants to talk about their experiences, good and bad.

I will also bring back to work the realisation that I can slow things down, instead of believing that I need to get everything done 5 minutes ago, this will lead to confidence in my ideas and opinions, other skills include team working skills, as I have been out of team role for some time now, and relationship building with internal and external clients.

Events like the earthquake and tsunami in Japan made me realise you only live once and if I don’t grab every opportunity that comes my way, life might just pass me by.

Doing this for charity gives me an even greater sense of accomplishment.

What do I want to achieve?

  • Make it to base camp
  • Feel as good as possible while doing the trek in the extreme altitude
  • Forget about speed and concentrate on pace and stamina
  • Get to know the team
  • Raise as much money as possible for ShelterBox

What can I do to achieve my goals

  • Increase exercise
  • Fit in walks in the countryside
  • Appreciate the enormity of the task
  • Research high altitude treks
  • Speak to Charity
  • Develop relationship with charity
  • Come up with fund raising ideas
  • Get the message out there about the trek and charity aspect

What will I do if I can't achieve your goals

  • Be positive
  • Support team mates
  • Get as close as possible to achieving all targets
  • Keep trying to hit target after the event

Fitness Goals

  • Set up training schedule
  • Be able to do press ups
  • Jog on cross-trainer for 1 hour at level 18
  • Include regular walks in my week
  • Attend at least 1 spin class
  • Strengthen my arms so they can lift 20kgs for 10 reps comfortably
  • Strengthen my legs so they can do 5 sets of 100 reps of leg presses at 75kg
  • Would like to lose 15-20lbs by the time the trek comes around
  • Climb 4 floors of stairs without being out of breath
  • Raise £2000 by beginning of September
  • Organise fundraising events
  • Understand the effects of altitude and of ways to combat them
  • Increase water intake to 3 litres daily
