Hello! My name is Emma Law, and I work as a Consultant in the Healthcare Consulting division of Datamonitor.

I still remember the moment the announcement came from Lindsey Roberts about the trek, opening up the email and reading the brief, my heart racing because I was already getting very excited!… And now here I am, lucky to have been one of the 8 chosen ones to accompany Steve and Neil on this incredible journey J

By no means am I an intrepid traveller, but I like to think(!) I am fairly sporty and not immune to exercise. Having said that, this trek is probably on a different wavelength altogether! Two weeks in the Himalayan Mountains, variable weather conditions, no running water, no supermarket at our disposal, no internet…just the company of the group and perhaps a couple of yaks… But we’re doing this for a reason and that’s to raise as much money as we can for two very worthy disaster relief charities: Red Cross Fund (for the Japanese Tsunami & Earthquake) and Shelterbox.

So what can I learn on this trip? I am naturally quite competitive but I’m pretty sure running in rocky terrain at high altitude isn’t going to win me any medals! Hence I see this trip as a great test of my patience, my mental and physical boundaries, and my ability to cope with the unknown. I really hope to embrace everything that this challenge throws at me and conquer any emotional or physical barriers which I may be faced with.

I may be small (5’3”) but when it comes to exercise I’m energetic! So I hope I will be able to provide some inspiration when the going gets tough. Hopefully some trekking experience from the Atlas Mountains will come in handy too.

Please take a moment to visit our individual JustGiving pages and support our team in achieving our fundraising targets and beyond on this incredible journey!!

What do I want to achieve?

  • Reach base camp safely with the rest of the team
  • Achieve the £3000 fundraising target, if not beat it!
  • Learn more about Nepalese culture and pick up a few phrases to communicate with our Sherpa guides
  • Come back with some new goals to achieve (either personal or work related)

What can I do to achieve my goals

  • Stick with the training program, not to give up when the going gets tough!
  • Encourage and support my fellow team members to meet their training objectives
  • Maintain focus on fundraising right to the very end
  • Eat healthily & train safely
  • Cutting my journey on the tube shorter and walking more!

What will I do if I can't achieve your goals

  • Try and understand what went wrong, to learn from it
  • Support the rest of the team in getting to base camp
  • Redirect efforts into fundraising

Fitness Goals

  • Be able to comfortably walk for several hours (from 5 to 8)
  • Be comfortably completing those 4 cardio/strengthening sessions a week by August (from 6 to 9)
  • Get back into the swimming pool (I haven’t swum for over 15 years!) (from 3 to 7)
  • Increase lean muscle mass and improve core conditioning (from 6 to 8)

Sights, smells and sounds…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s coming up to almost been a week since we left Nepal and I’m definitely feeling ‘nepalisick’! I find myself flicking through my photos at least once a day, sometimes more! I’ve been struggling to put my finger on what I’m desperately missing…I think it’s a combination of being in such beautiful surroundings, the fantastic [...]

An experience we will never forget

Waking up this morning in my bedroom still very tired I looked up expecting to see the roof of my tent, to turn right and see my tent buddy and to hear the sound of yak bells outside. Oddly my back seems to feel a bit sore (perhaps I’m so used to sleeping on the floor [...]

Mitosa!

Mitosa must be one of the most commonly said nepali words on this trip. And if you are thinking is that water, toilet, yak dung, cold or are we there yet then you’ve guessed wrong! Mitosa means ‘yummy’ or ‘tasty’ and if anyone were to check our waistlines I’m not sure they would believe we’ve [...]

And we’re off!!!

The day has finally arrived!! I can’t believe we leave for Kathmandu in less than 24 hours… I’m finding it difficult to differentiate between my emotions at the moment. I’m definately excited and I’m definately nervous! and it’s all sort of bundled up…. Saying goodbye to my team last night was not the usual ‘have a good holiday, eat lots, [...]

Cottaging in the Cotswolds

So here is the proof that training can be fun!! Last weekend 14 of us headed to the Cotswolds for some r&r – well sort of! We arrived late on Friday evening after approximately a 3 hour drive from London and having seen some photos of the cottage online I was eager to see if [...]

“Dig deeper!”… “Focus…and go!”

So these aren’t the words from me! But from Shaun T, who incidentally, I’ve never met before but I see him and I hear his voice most days of the week. :) So you are probably wondering, who is this guy?! Meet Shaun! (yes, I can imagine what you might be thinking!) Shaun T is the [...]

Andy the human dustbin…

And that’s what happens when you go out with such a friendly bunch – you earn yourself a nickname! But then who ordered the main which came with 7 other dishes?   So last Thursday was our first team social and what better way to start immersing ourselves into some Nepalese culture by going for [...]

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hello everyone! Put your aprons on, pre-heat your ovens and line those cake tins…because it’s the great bake-off!
